The cable 8 comprises an electrically conducting core and an insulating cover which extends along the core. At least one stiffening cover 20 is positioned on the insulating cover. This stiffens the cable such that it does not tangle during use. The invention is particularly suited to cables that are used with ear-bud type earphones 6 e.g. with portable media players, mobile telephones and the like.
