An oil cooler is provided for a wall 2 of an air flow passage of a gas turbine engine. The oil cooler has a heat exchanger (SAOHE, Figure 4) with an oil conduit 1 for carrying a flow of heated oil proximal to the wall 2 of the air flow passage 3. The heat exchanger (SAOHE) is arranged to transfer heat from the heated oil to the air flowing through the passage 3. The oil cooler further has a system for altering the flow of air across the heat exchanger such that the heat transfer effectiveness of the heat exchanger can be adjusted. Optionally the system has one or more temperature sensors (TO, Tf, Figure 4) operatively connected such that the flow of air across the heat exchanger (SAOHE) is altered depending on the temperature sensed by the at least one temperature sensor (TO, Tf). The temperature sensors may detect the temperature of oil within the gas turbine engine or may detect the temperature of fuel being sent for combustion by the gas turbine engine.
