The voltage step-up circuit is connected to a battery (3). A control unit controls current circulating between the voltage reducing circuit and the voltage step-up circuit so that the current is higher than current in the input of the reducing circuit and higher than current circulating in the battery. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an on-board battery charger in a car. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# On-board battery charger for charging a battery of a car e.g. electric car or hybrid car, using a single-phase alternating voltage network, three-phase alternating voltage network, direct current network or direct voltage network (all claimed). #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The control unit controls the current circulating between the voltage reducing circuit and the voltage step-up circuit so that the current is higher than the current in the input of the reducing circuit and higher than the current circulating in the battery, thus improving the charging efficiency of the charger by limiting the number of elements included in the power transfer so as to limit the sources of power losses. The design of the charger enables reducing load on components of the charger so as to increase the lifetime of the charger.
