<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that enters sleep state when a factor that prevents the image forming apparatus from entering the sleep state can be eliminated with time, even if the apparatus cannot enter the sleep state, when a power-saving/power supply switch of the image forming apparatus is turned off. <P>SOLUTION: When a controller 1 of the image forming apparatus detects that the power-saving/power supply switch 10 is operated, sleep mode transition determination processing of determining whether the apparatus can enter the sleep state is executed, and when the transition is possible, control is performed to enter the sleep state. On the other hand, when the transition to the sleep state is impossible, it is determined whether the factor that prevents the apparatus from entering the sleep state can be eliminated with time. When the factor can be eliminated with time, control is performed to execute the sleep mode transition determination processing again after a certain time passes, up to a predetermined limit.
