<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device capable of reading images from both back and front surfaces of a carried document, making images read from both of the back and front surfaces clear, and reducing the height direction dimensions of the device. <P>SOLUTION: A scanner unit 3 reads images from both back and front surfaces of a document by a first image sensor 11 and a second image sensor 12 while carrying the document by an ADF portion 6. A first document retaining portion 21 and a second document retaining portion 22 prevent the document from floating from a first transparent portion 17 for a carried document and a second transparent portion 18 for a carried document. The second document retaining portion 22 is arranged at a position at which a part thereof is lower than a height position H1 of a document placing surface of a transparent portion 15 for a still document, concerning a height direction. Therefore, the second transparent portion 18 for a carried document and the second image sensor 12 can be also arranged at further lower positions by this amount.
