<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sulfonium compound usable for efficiently producing a sulfonium borate complex, and a method for producing the sulfonium compound. <P>SOLUTION: The sulfonium compound is prepared by reacting a compound represented by formula (1) and a compound represented by formula (2) with each other. In the formula (1): R1 is an aryl or naphthyl group; and X is a halogen atom.
