The present invention relates to an electronic security system which offers protection against unauthorized access to a safe deposit box or container in which the system is installed, as well as means which allow the safe deposit box or container to operate either as an autonomous unit or as a unit controlled from one or more remote centres; the system of the invention has modules for access by registered users, non-registered users or users from another area; for a remote opening request; for illegal access from inside or outside; for control owing to exceeded authorized access time; for control owing to electrical energy failure; for control of detectable additional events; for recovery from past events and for the cutting-off of communication with the remote site. The modules can be integrated in subsystems, operating inside the safe deposit box or area to be protected, which can operate autonomously if necessary, and one or more subsystems for monitoring from one or more remote centres with the ability to act on the individual units. The modules include detection means, means for emitting alarms, personal identification means, means for recording events, means for transmitting data either in a wired or wireless, analogue and/or digital and/or optical manner, and means for supplying electrical energy and support means owing to the failure of the latter, which means are operated via data processing and control means of the devices.
