PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protein-fragment complementation assay (PCA) for drug discovery, in particular to identify compounds that activate or inhibit cellular pathways.

SOLUTION: Candidate substances for drugs are screened by constructing and applying a protein-fragment complementation assay (PCA) which is a method of measuring protein-protein interactions using intact living cells. Specifically, provided are (1) a method of screening chemical compounds and chemicals libraries to identify chemicals that alter a function of specific biochemical pathways and (2) a method of screening cDNA libraries to identify genes that serve a role in specific biochemical pathways.
