<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an oligomer or polymer avoiding the problem of remarkable moisture absorption while sustaining aqueous developability, and containing a polymer main chain being an optically switching benzocyclobutenic polymer, a benzocyclobutene-reactive group and an optically switching side chain group. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing a curable oligomer or polymer includes partially polymerizing a first polyfunctional benzocyclobutene monomer represented by formula and having at least three reactive groups with a second hydroxyl-substituted benzocyclobutene monomer, and coupling a halogen-substituted compound containing a diazoquinone group with a hydroxyl-substituting group.
