The method involves determining actual distance (5) of a vehicle underfloor (4) from a road (2), and monitoring surroundings of vehicle (1) on potential obstacles (3). The size (6) of the potential obstacles is determined and is set in relation to actual distance sub-floor collision situation for a motor vehicle to recognize threatening collision. A warning is outputted to a driver based on detection of the threatening collision. A parking sensor system (7) is used for monitoring the surroundings of the vehicle on potential obstacles.
