The method involves switching-on a hydrostatic additional drive (10) of the vehicle. A flow rate of a hydraulic pump is automatically adjusted depending on a distance between the vehicle and the mobile work machine. The distance is determined by a distance measuring system. A decoupling of a wheel or an axle of the vehicle from a combustion engine (4) takes place before the adjustment of the flow rate. An independent claim is included for a vehicle with a distance measuring system, whose measuring value is used for the speed control of the wheel.
