<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical connector which can easily remove a coating of an insertion optical fiber, and an assembling method of the optical connector. <P>SOLUTION: An optical connector includes: a ferrule 10 in which a tip end portion of a built-in optical fiber 12 is built; a first clamp portion 20 provided so as to ensure a space 18 in which the built-in optical fiber 12 can be deflection-deformed behind the ferrule 10 and between the ferrule 10 and the clamp 20, and capable of gripping and fixing an abutting portion P of a rear end portion 12d of the built-in optical fiber 12 and a bare optical fiber 3 exposed by removing a coating 2 of the insertion optical fiber 1; and a coating removal portion 31 for removing the coating 2 of the insertion optical fiber 1 behind the first clamp portion 20. The insertion optical fiber 1 is inserted and moved forward. The bare optical fiber 3 is made to abut on the rear end portion 12d of the built-in optical fiber 12, and pressed to deflection-deform the built-in optical fiber 12 in the space 18.
