A waterglass-based fireproofing element with a sandwich structure comprises a gas- and water-tight core containing waterglass with a residual water content of 20-40 wt% and an outer casing of polyurethane (PU) foam with a bulk density of 10-100 g/l. Independent claims are also included for (a) a process for the on-site production of such fireproofing elements by fixing gas- and water-tight encased waterglass to a fresh layer of PU foam and covering it all round with another layer of foam; (b) structural elements containing such fireproofing elements.
