The electrochemical exhaust gas lambda cell for gases includes insulating- and protective layers over conductors leading to electrodes in regions of high temperature, with improvements in dynamic control. The insulating layer (24) completely surrounds the conductors (7A, 8A) leading to the first, second and/or third electrodes (7,8,11). Preferred Features: Second and third electrodes (8,11) share a common line (8A) which divides (8B,8C) just before the electrodes. One or both of these is surrounded by insulant. A heater (H) is included in the sensor. The length over which the insulation extends, is a function of temperature distribution along the sensor (1). The insulation length is a function of the extent of the conductive region introduced by electrical heating. Insulation of the first electrode (7) supply line (7A) is covered by a protective layer. This layer continues over the uninsulated region of this conductor. The insulating layer is porus or densely-sintered. When using a porous insulating layer, a gas-tight barrier is included.
