The invention concerns a read/write device for smart card comprising a card body provided with electronic circuits connected to means forming an antenna. It further comprises a frame (18) with a first frame portion (22) and a second frame portion (24), the two frame portions being parallel to each other and defining between them a slot (26) for allowing a through passage for a card and two substantially identical coils (30, 32) forming an antenna, each coil being integral with one of the frame portions, such that the coil planes are parallel to each other and the coils are mutually opposite, the equivalent radius R of each coil being substantially equal to the distance H separating the two coil planes; and means (20) for applying a common current to both coils and for receiving the signal picked by said coils.
