The invention relates to a new economical and highly sensitive method that makes it possible to clearly identify the pepetrators of environmental pollution by water insoluble organic liquids and/or the origin or producers of polluting organic liquids.The inventive method is a method for marking natural and synthetic water insoluble fluids such as crude oil, fractions thereof and coaltar fractions. Said method is characterized in that the above-mentioned products are mixed with a liphophilized, proprietary and/or origin-specific oligonucleotide that can be detected using known i.e. optical methods. The above-mentioned water insoluble organic fluids containing the lipophilized oligonucleotide is identified by isolating the oligonucleotide and subsequently by means of sequence analysis.
