Preparation of a dispersant with hydrophobic and associative groups comprises the radical polymerization, in reaction medium containing at least 2 wt.% water and organic solvent, of: (A) 0-80 mol.% hydrophobic monomer; (B) 0-70 mol.% anionic or neutral hydrosoluble monomer; (C) 20-99.9 mol.% cationic hydrosoluble monomer; and (D) 0.1-10 mol.% amphiphilic hydrosoluble monomer.
