Method for transmitting data packets in a telecommunication system with link adaptation according to a HARQ protocol in order to optimise the transmission power

The method involves simultaneously selecting following parameter e.g. transmission number (Trn), rate of target package error of each transmission to attain a residual packet error rate (PERres), and a modulation and coding diagram corresponding to each target package error rate so as to minimize a transmission power of data packet. The data packet is transmitted on a transmission resource. The modulation and coding diagram is selected such that a signal to interference noise ratio and the power are linked with a propagation channel quality indicator by a specific relation.
