PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling a tilt are provided to start the tilt control by detecting a TPP(Tangential Push Pull) error signal through a step of initializing a tilt of an optical recording medium and adjusting offset between a central level of a peak-to-peak voltage and a reference level of the tilt control, so as to correctly control the tilt using a TPP manner afterward. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup unit(22) has a built-in light detector in which optical beam reflected from an optical disk is converted into an electric signal. A servo error generator(23) generates a servo error signal from the electric signal output from the optical pickup unit. A TE(Tracking Error) detector(24) detects a TE signal generated in the servo error generator. An FE(Focus Error) detector(25) detects an FE signal generated in the servo error generator. A TPP error, or a tilt error detector(26) detects a TPP error signal generated in the servo error generator. An LPF(Low Pass Filter,27) is arranged. A servo controller(28) generates a control signal for controlling the servo by the signals in the error detectors. And a tilt controller(29) controls the servo by controlling the optical pickup unit according to a driving signal output from the servo controller.
