PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive effect element capable of realizing the narrowed track by reducing the track width and preventing the generation of Barkhousen noise, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: This element is provided with a laminated layer body 6 having a non-magnetic conductive layer 4, a fixed magnetic layer 3 formed on one surface of the non-magnetic conductive layer 4, a free magnetic layer 5 formed on another surface of the non-magnetic conductive layer 4, and an anti- ferromagnetic layer 2 formed on the surface of the opposite side to the surface coming in contact with the non-magnetic conductive layer 4 of the fixed magnetic layer 3 to fix the magnetizing direction of the fixed magnetic layer 3, then the free magnetic layer 5 is furnished with the magneto-sensitive area 5b for stipulating the track width T1 and the bias area 5a positioned so as to hold the magneto-sensitive area 5b there between from both ends, and the arrangement is made so that the bias magnetic field for aligning the magnetizing direction to the direction crossed with the magnetizing direction of the fixed magnetic layer 3 is impressed on the magneto-resistance area 5b by the bias area 5a.
