PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device of which power consumption can be reduced without incurring picture quality deterioration. SOLUTION: After a voltage corresponding to a desired image data is applied to a ferroelectric liquid crystal having spontaneous polarization with a prescribed period to rewrite a display image (a period A), the entire voltage applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal is removed (timing C), the display image before the voltage is removed is maintained (a period B) and such voltage (voltage F) that displays of all pixels are all black displays, is applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal before the voltage corresponding to the image data is applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal again.
