A display is formed from an optical waveguide 1 and a series of diffraction gratings 2, 11, 14, 15 for accessing an expanded field of view for the waveguide display. A pair of diffraction gratings 2, 14 are arranged to receive and diffract light to an angle for guided propagation along the optical waveguide 1, and for output from the optical waveguide 1. A second pair of switchable diffraction gratings 11, 15, are switchable between a diffractive state and a non-diffractive state and selectively diffract the light to/from the first pair of diffraction gratings 2,14 to an angle which increases the field of view of the optical waveguide. |
