PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detecting device which solves the problems of the method of controlling the position of a vehicle to a lane of a road, eliminates the need for complicated construction for installation for installing lane markers, and exerts no adverse effects on traveling of a vehicle. SOLUTION: Lateral distance of a vehicle with respect to the center of lane is detected by detecting the position of a lane marker installed at the center part of the road lane on or nearby the road surface, and communication facilities installed by the road or on the road or on a road overhead rack receives the value of the travel lane width at a point, where the vehicle is traveling continuously or each time the value changes to detect the distance from both the flanks of the vehicle to the right and left lanes.
