A system for alerting a person with a hearing impairment playing a sport or game to a signal provided by a referee or umpire is disclosed. The system comprises a referee module 10 worn by the referee and at least one player module 12 worn by a player. The referee module comprises a microphone, preferably with a pickup range of four feet (1.22m) or less; means for detecting a predetermined audio signal â for example, a refereeâ s whistle â received through the microphone; and a transmitter which, upon detection of the audio signal, transmits an alert signal to a receiver of the player modules. The player module includes means, such as a vibrating unit, to alert the player to receipt of the alert signal. The modules may establish a paired data channel, perhaps via a pairing/learn mode. Such a mode may be entered upon reception of a control signal from a control module.
