The invention relates to a covering piece of the type that consists of: a skin comprising a layer of leather (10) having a grain side (12) that is intended to be visible and an opposing split side, a support (22) which is intended to confer stiffness on the covering piece, and a foam (24) which is disposed between the skin and the support (22) in order to apply an edge part of the skin against part of the support. In addition to the leather layer (10), the aforementioned skin comprises a sealing layer (18) which is disposed on the split side. In addition, at the edge part of the skin that is in contact with the support (22), the edge of the leather layer (10) is bevel cut (16) and narrows as it extends towards the exterior of the skin, from the grain side to the split side. The inventive piece is intended for the interior fittings of motor vehicles. The invention also relates to a method of producing one such covering piece.
