PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition for treating diabetes complications and a food composition for preventing diabetes complication, containing 2`-O-caffeoylplantarenaloside are provided to suppress aldose reductase. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for treating diabetes complications caused by excessive sorbitol accumulation contains 2`-O-caffeoylplantarenaloside of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. The complications include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, or diabetic cataract. A food composition for preventing diabetes complications contains the compound of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. The compound of chemical formula 1 is (1s)-1alpha-[[2-O-(3,4-dihydroxy-trans-cinnamoyl)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]oxy]-7beta-methyl-4a alpha-hydroxy-1,4a,5,6,7,7a alpha-hexahydrocyclopenta[c]pyran-4-carbaldehyde.
