PURPOSE: A light emitting device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to improve the crystallization of a light emitting device by removing defects generated on a PSS(patterned sapphire substrate). CONSTITUTION: A substrate has a plurality of patterns(105). A first semiconductor layer(120) includes a plurality of air gaps(115). An n type semiconductor layer is formed on the first semiconductor layer. The active layer is formed on the n type semiconductor layer. A p type semiconductor layer is formed on the active layer.
