The present invention provides substantially purified peptide portions of adipokine polypeptides, including, for example, C1q/TNF-related protein-12 (CTRP12), a functional homologue or function fragment of CTRP12, and a fusion polypeptide comprising any of the above. Methods for treating Type 2 diabetes mellitus by administering to a patient any of the following; CTRP12, a functional homologue of CTRP12, a functional fragment of CTRP12 or its functional homologue, a fusion polypeptide comprising any of the above, a substantially purified nucleic acid molecule encoding a polypeptide of any of the above, a vector comprising such nucleic acid molecule, a host cell transformed with such vector, a ligand that specifically binds to a polypeptide mentioned above, a compound that modifies the level of expression or activity of the amino acid sequence according to any of the above, a pharmaceutical composition comprising any one the above and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and any combination of the above are also provided.
