The method involves providing a link data field that is assigned with a control unit (4). Diagnostic data elements assigned to the control unit are linked into the data field. A unitary linkage data field identifier is assigned to the data field. Access to each data element is carried-out by referring the identifier. An error status code is assigned to the data elements such that a determination is made to check whether the diagnosis data assigned with the code is relevant for a predetermined error condition depending on the predetermined error condition by the respective code. An independent claim is also included for a diagnostic device for analyzing diagnostic data for a control unit of a motor car.
