<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer that has reduced cost by simplifying its configuration without using a switch being an existing component, and that securely detects whether a cover is open or closed. <P>SOLUTION: The thermal printer includes: a body case supporting a platen roller rotatably, and provided with an opening part allowing a stored paper roll to be attached to and detached from the body case; the opening/closing cover having a thermal head and attached to the body case so as to be openable/closable to cover the opening part; fixing pawls supported by the opening/closing cover movably, and configured to fix the opening/closing cover by being fit to a fitting part provided on the body case. The thermal printer further includes: first contact parts that are provided on opening/closing cover and the body case respectively and conduct electricity in contact with each other while the opening/closing cover is closed; and second contact parts that are provided on the opening/closing cover and the fixing pawl respectively and conduct electricity in contact with each other while the opening/closing cover is fixed to the body case.
