An image processing apparatus comprises: an image input unit to which a medical image obtained by capturing an image of a mucosal surface of a living body is input; a characteristic amount calculating unit that calculates predetermined characteristic amounts for the pixels or areas in the medical image; a structural area extracting unit that extracts, as a structural area, a desired structure from the medical image; a basic-shape applying unit that applies, on the basis of the calculated characteristic amounts, associations with a plurality of predetermined basic shapes for the pixels or areas in the structural area; and a structural area dividing unit that area-divides the structure into the predetermined basic shapes on the basis of the result of the application of the basic-shape applying unit. |
