Culture media comprising unchelated magnesium ions and an oxygen scavenger are disclosed, for use in methods of cultivating microorganisms including Listeria spp. The media ma}' be used to culture a sample to detect the presence of bacteria in the sample. Compositions which comprise a non-magnesium chelating buffer and an oxygen scavenger for supplementing a culture medium are also disclosed
