<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tracking apparatus and a tracking method which even after a face is not detected or accuracy of face detection is deteriorated, avoids deterioration of tracking accuracy in a frame. <P>SOLUTION: A face to be tracked is tracked by tracking processing using a face detection circuit 1307, tracking processing using luminance information by a tracking processing circuit 1305, and tracking processing using color information by a tracking processing circuit 1306. A face periphery to be tracked is tracked by estimation from the position of the face detected by the tracking processing using the face detection circuit 1307, and tracked by tracking processing using luminance information by the tracking processing circuit and tracking processing using color information by the tracking processing circuit 1306.
