The battery management system (30) has a cell monitoring unit (31) for monitoring multiple battery cells (14) of a battery module, where the cell monitoring unit has a microcontroller (33) and a conducting chip (32) for monitoring electrical voltages of the battery cells. The cell monitoring unit has a min-max-measuring unit (34) which is formed to determine a minimum and maximum voltage value of the battery cells and to discard intermediate voltage values. The min-max-measuring unit and the conducting chip are connected in parallel to each other. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a motor vehicle with a drive system; and (2) a method for monitoring a battery.
