The method involves supplying energy required for the functioning of a passive wireless data storage using electromagnetic field generated by a read or write device. The read or write device operates together with the data storage using a transmission power which is higher as compared to a subsequent communication phase during a time period at the beginning of data exchange. The increased transmission power is used during the settling time for detecting the data storage, and is used up to the complete reception of a reply message of the data storage. An independent claim is also included for a read or write device for detection of a passive wireless data storage, particularly ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification transponder.
