<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device which improves the light extraction efficiency and the reliability. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting device includes: a translucent substrate 10; an organic EL element 20 formed on one surface side of the translucent substrate 10 and having an organic EL layer 23 including a light emitting layer disposed between an anode 22 and a cathode 24; an uneven structure part 30 provided on the other surface side of the translucent substrate 10 and suppressing reflection of light emitted from the organic EL element 20; a substrate for a package 40 disposed on the other surface side of the translucent substrate 10; and a protection part 50 preventing water from reaching the organic EL element 20. The substrate for the package 40 is a glass substrate. The translucent substrate 10 is a plastic substrate. The protection part 50 is formed by a thin film of an inorganic material or a laminated film of the thin films. The anode 22 and the cathode 24 are formed so as to extend to positions that do not overlap with the light emitting layer.
