A gripper block assembly for use in a coiled tubing injector having a carrier adapted to be connected to the chain of a coiled tubing injector and a shoe for engaging the coiled tubing passing through the coiled tubing injector. The shoe and the carrier have formations projecting as to one and receiving as to the other, each of the formations having a generally circular configuration when viewed in plan view. The projecting formation and the receiving formation are engaged by relative axial movement of the carrier and the shoe along an imaginary axis perpendicular to the formations. The formations are at least partially rotatable relative to one another when the projecting formation is received in the receiving formation. There is a selectively releasably lock preventing counter rotation of the projecting formation and the receiving formation when the projecting formation is received in the receiving formation, and there is a predetermined amount of rotation between the two formations to engage a latch preventing related axial movement between the projecting and receiving formations.
