The method involves driving a compressor (3) of a household appliance (1) by a drive motor (4) that is actuated by a control device (5). Current operating temperature of the drive motor is detected by a temperature sensor (6), and a determination is made by the control device to check whether the current operating temperature exceeds a given threshold value. The drive motor is switched-off if the current operating temperature exceeds the threshold value, where the threshold value is adjusted based on an operational program of the household appliance during operation. The operating program is an eco-program, a high-speed program or a standard program. An independent claim is also included for a household appliance.
