The method involves performing measurement of distance between a measuring probe (5) and a tool (1), and performing additional measurement of the distance between the measuring probe and the tool. The measured value corresponding to a centering gap in a predetermined direction is utilized to correct a position of a tool spindle and to cancel the difference in a centering. A rotary barrel (3) is rotated for placing the measuring probe in a measurement position angularly spaced about 90 degree from another measuring position. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a cutting machine (2) a device for centering a tool or a tool spindle of a cutting machine.
