A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to prevent damage to an impeller by heating water in a water tub and transferring the heat to a drain pump for melting frozen remaining water if the temperature of the drain pump is lower than a set temperature. A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the steps of sensing the temperature of a drain pump(S130), and comparing the sensed temperature with a set temperature and melting the frozen drain pump by turning on or turning off a water supply unit and a heater if the sensed temperature of the drain pump is lower than the set temperature(S150). |
