PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for generating a high-strength terahertz electromagnetic wave suitable to a practical use using a coherent phonon in a quantum structure. SOLUTION: In the method for generating a terahertz electromagnetic wave, an electromagnetic field is applied to a quantum well structure, a quantum confined Stark effect is utilized to control a difference of energy between two excitons in a quantum well layer by the electromagnetic field, the difference of energy between the two excitons is matched with the energy of the coherent LO phonon of the quantum well layer, the exciton quantum beat or the momentary quantum interference between the excitons is made to function as a driving force of the coherent LO phonon, thereby, the high-amplitude coherent LO phonon is produced, and the terahertz electromagnetic wave is generated by an oscillation of polarization caused by it.
