<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for alkali storage battery, and an alkali storage battery, capable of exhibiting satisfactory high-temperature life characteristic by solving the conventional problem of occurrence of a new surface by repetitions of charge and discharge and corrosion thereof. <P>SOLUTION: This negative electrode material for alkali storage battery is obtained by composing a hydrogen storage alloy powder with a metal oxide having a melting point of 1500°C or higher.
