PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor-driven center mechanism of a tire vulcanizer which can prevent damage and breakage of the constituent parts and which consists of a simple structure even if there are erroneous operations of the brake or incorrect settings, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The center mechanism 100 of the tire vulcanizer includes a screw mechanism having a screw shaft 16 and a screw nut 19 screwed onto the screw shaft 16, a motor 32 for rotating the screw shaft 16 so as to raise and lower the upper ring body 7, an inverter for controlling the motor 32, and a mechanical brake 32a for retaining a predetermined position of the upper ring body 7 so that the bladder 6 may keep a shaping state. The mechanism is characterized in that, within a time range from start of a closing action of the upper die 37 to contact of the upper die 37 and the upper ring body 7, operation of the mechanical brake 32a is released and the position control by the inverter of the upper ring body 7 is started and that at least after the release of the operation of the mechanical brake 32a the position of the upper ring body 7 is controlled by the inverter.
