A method for treating a lignocellulosic material comprises subjecting the material to microwave radiation at the resonant frequency of the lignin. The absorption of the applied radiation may be measured, and the application of radiation ceased with the absorption indicates that the desired amount of lignin has been dissociated. Apparatus for treating lignocellulosic material comprises microwave generating means for subjecting the material to microwave radiation at the resonant frequency of the lignin. The frequency may be such that the glucose core of the material does not dissociate. The microwave generating means maybe comprise a magnetron and the apparatus may comprise means adapted to transmit the microwaves to a treatment chamber. The transmission means may include waveguide means. The apparatus may be turnable and have a feedback arrangement maintaining the microwave frequency at the resonant frequency of the lignin. |
