PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition and a health functional food containing extracts of Laminaria japonica Aresch, Amorphophallus rivieri Durieu, and Curcuma longa L. are provided to reduce the number and size of adipocytes and to prevent and treat obesity. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating obesity contains extracts of Laminaria japonica Aresch, Amorphophallus rivieri Durieu, and Curcuma longa L. as active ingredients. The extract is prepared using water, low carbon number alcohol, or a mixture thereof. The dose of the composition is 0.01-1000 mg per body weight. A health functional food for preventing and treating obesity contains the extracts as active ingredients.
