PURPOSE: A composition containing a Piper longum L. extract for preventing and treating inner ear damage is provided to suppress the reduction of sensory hair cells. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating inner ear damage contains a Piper longum L. extract as an active ingredient. The inner ear damage is caused by apoptosis of sensory hair cells and is due to aminoglycoside antibiotics. The aminoglycoside antibiotics include amikacin, arbekacin, gentamycin, kanamycin, neomycin, netilmycin, paromomycin, streptomycin, or tobramycin. A health functional food for preventing and treating inner ear damage contains the extract as an active ingredient.
