The apparatus comprises a supporting member (24) positioned at one of two metal sheets. The supporting member is arranged at a certain distance from free edges of the metal sheets to be welded and carries a pivot point (53) at a fixed distance above the sheets to be welded. The pivot point of the supporting member is used as a pivot for a lever (54) whose one end is equipped with a pressure pad (55) that is positioned adjacent to the edges to be welded. The lever is subjected to the action of an actuator (56) placed on one of the edges. The apparatus comprises a supporting member (24) positioned at one of two metal sheets.
