The device (A) has a temporary attachment unit (23) provided with a cylinder housing. Adjustment units (11, 15, 16) adjust the position of bearing caps. A support plate (20) is provided with a receiving surface of the cylinder housing. The temporary attachment unit is provided in form of a stud. A longitudinal flattening element (8) is attached with a longitudinal reference (2), where the flattening element forms a block. A space is formed between the flattening element and the longitudinal reference according to adjustable dimension of the cap for inserting the cap. An independent claim is also included for a method for positioning bearing caps on a cylinder housing or a cylinder head of a thermal combustion engine of a car.
