<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To successfully perform alignment control and phase control in a liquid crystal device modulating a light wave by birefringence of a liquid crystal, and to allow compensation for residual birefringence even when it occurs. <P>SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal device sandwiching liquid crystal molecules 5 by a first base plate 1 and a second base plate 2 where electrodes are formed and modulating a light wave by birefringence of a liquid crystal, a grating structure 6 having a pitch p shorter than the wavelength of the light wave is provided in the first base plate 1 or in the second base plate 2. The grating structure 6 controls the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules 5 and performs phase control of the light wave passing through the liquid crystal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
