<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately discriminate a character region in image data with a simple operation by using a memory with comparatively small capacity on the basis of the image data obtained by photoelectrically reading an original image. <P>SOLUTION: A Laplacian amount calculation section 21 calculates one-dimensional Laplacian amounts in a first direction and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction on a prescribed target pixel on the basis of image data obtained by reading an original image.
